On making a vaginal examination Dr Cairns found a foetus of about six weeks protruding from the os uteri and removed it. Eight months after he delivered the same patient of a fine healthy child. He pointed out that the case was of interest for two reasons. First, that it showed how one ovum might be thrown off at an early stage of pregnancy, while the other was retained till the full time; and secondly, in a medicolegal point of view, it proved the difficulty of determining whether a child was legitimate or not, the husband being dead, and the wife having a live full-time child after she had
